The Global Citizen Award and why you should do it by Neil McArdle – Nicaragua 2015/16

Eva Mahon, David Coyle, Luke O’Sullivan, Sara Birch, Orla Casey, Oisin Bennett, Naomi Keenan, Neil McArdle and Roseanna Shanahan received a Global Citizen Award on the 8th of April in Smock Alley. The journey to accomplish my Global Citizen Award began following my UCDVO placement in Nicaragua in 2016. One of the pre-requisites for the G.C.A was to volunteer in my community, and as the main man Gandhi says ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ As a student of Linguistics, I knew this would come in the form of English language teaching. So after much deliberation and begging, I secured funding for free conversational English Classes

Gold winner? We want you!

The GCA Standards and Awarding Committee have been busy reviewing and reporting on the 2016 GCA programme. They are now looking for a new Gold past participant to join.  Outgoing gold winner Elaine Doyle explains the role further:  ‘Knowing the work that goes in to completing any level of the Global Citizen Award it is a great achievement and really helps create the link between volunteering abroad and the knowledge and passion you can bring home. Being on the Standards and Conferring Committee was a great opportunity to be involved in how the programme is developing and bringing each level of the Global Citizen Award to a certain level. I enjoyed the practical mix of taking my

GCA Winner focus on Cathal

Gold winner Cathal volunteered in South Africa with EIL.  My interest in development and volunteering began while in university studying nursing. Volunteering with the NGO healthcare projects in South Africa allowed me to share my skills and knowledge as a Registered General Nurse with people striving to address the health, social and emotional wellbeing of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The community in Kayamandi Township where I volunteered, and the people I worked alongside really inspired hope in the face of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and filled me with optimism for the future of the township. Along the way, I met some wonderful people and immersed myself in a different culture

GCA Winner focus on Deborah

Gold winner Deborah volunteered with Development Perspectives. I travelled to Tanzania with Development Perspectives in 2010 as part of their 8 month development education programme Insight. My first time to Tanzania but not my last. The experience had a profound impact on me, the effects of which are still evident. The partnership with Uvikiuta a youth organisation based in Dar Es Salaam and the participation of our Tanzanian counterparts enriched the project so much and really allowed a greater understanding, not only of what life is like in Tanzania, but also a deeper understanding of some of the complex development issues we had been exploring as part of the programme and an

GCA Winner focus on Vicky

Gold winner Vicky volunteered in Guatemala with EIL.  Visiting Los Patojos in Guatemala was one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences I have had outside of Ireland. I was given the opportunity to teach Dance and English classes to children that were so enthusiastic, while they taught me to life live to the fullest and cherish every moment. Working in a centre that offered safety and education, with every ounce of colour thrown into it in a town that had been vulnerable to drugs and violent gangs. I spent my days learning from the children that I have met and the staff I befriended. My only hope is that during my current visit

GCA Winner focus on Sarah

Gold winner Sarah volunteered in South Africa with EIL.  I worked for 2 months with children living with HIV in South Africa. Working alongside such inspirational South African nurses dealing both personally and socially with these issues was truly eye opening and the joy I saw within the community was a testament to the unbreakable value of life, love and faith. Bringing my experiences home through my action projects was brilliant and reminded me of the social issues that our countries share.  Learning about HIV in an Irish setting was incredibly interesting and I was honoured to become part of Open Heart House, a community project working with HIV positive people in Dublin. This

GCA Winner focus on Angela

Gold winner Angela volunteered in India with EIL in 2015.  My volunteering experience in Karnataka, rural India, has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. I loved working with the children in tent school and government school and I received so much from them that I actually couldn’t describe it with words. I admire the children and their families immensely for the way they live their lives, always with a smile on their face despite their living conditions. I returned almost six months ago and not a day goes by that I don’t think about a particular child, a particular moment or one of the many adventures I lived
